Old short vampire stories are the very core which the vampires we know today are based on.
Even so, there are some pretty weird atrocities among the good ones.
If you are interested I suggest you read the following shorts:
"Carmilla"
"Bewitched"
"Dracula and the three brides" - (an abbreviation from Stoker's Dracula)
Not everything is worth reading...
"The curse of the Vourdalack" for example, notwithstanding some good details, describes a chasing scene almost as follows:
As I was galloping away on my horse and happy about my brilliant escape, I suddenly heard some pretty terrible screaming behind me. Bloody hell, the horde of vampires noticed me I thought! I sped up my horse but the vampires were pretty fast themselves.
Suddenly my dear love-buddy-vampire jumped on the back of my horse and started biting me. Well I pushed her off...
Then I saw how vampire-grandpa was vaulting himself forward with a stick! Bloody hell! O.o'
But no, he couldn't catch me. Then I heard some screaming again and noticed how vampire-mum picked up her vampire-child and tossed him towards me. Half way flown, the grandpa vampire poked him with his stick in order to fling him even further.
Then that airborne vampire-brat bit my horse in the neck on the flight and sucked! And then he fell off. And I was like... whew. But then oh my god they tossed another vampire child and beat him with a stick to increase the flight distance. Yet in vain they did so - as he flew over the horse and got slightly stepped on.
And then later that evening my horse bled to death.
The end!
I think I didn't exaggerate That much...
